Legacy Rewards Positioning & Communications Guidelines
This document establishes how Legacy Rewards is positioned internally. It sets the strategic frame that every external message, reward decision, badge criteria, and content piece should sit within. If something does not hold up against this document, it does not go out.
Positioning Statement
"Legacy Rewards recognises the learning, community contribution, and momentum toward employment that move an ALX learner from enrolled to employed. Every action recognised builds a track record that sets them apart to employers and recruiters."
Internal distillation: Rewarding the habits that get you hired.
What to communicate publicly: Rewarding the habits that make you stand out in your career.
The positioning anchors three things simultaneously: the learning, contribution, and professional credibility that learners build across their ALX journey; the concrete outcome that journey points toward (employment); and the mechanism that makes that journey visible over time (a track record that sets them apart).
The enrolled-to-employed frame is deliberate and needs to be understood correctly before it reaches any external channel. Legacy Rewards does not help people find jobs. It recognises the habits and behaviours that make people more hireable. Graduation comes first. Employability follows from the work of getting there.
The 3 Pillars of Rewarded Action
Every action that earns Legacy Points maps to one of these. If an action does not map cleanly to a pillar, it does not qualify.
| Pillar | What it reinforces | Examples |
| Learning Progression | Consistency, deliverable completion, progress toward graduation | Consistent milestone submission, graduation, graded boosts |
| Community Building | Participation, peer support, contribution to the ALX community | Hosting events, posting and commenting, Portal onboarding |
| Career Readiness | Employability behaviours and professional growth | CV upload, LinkedIn URL, Impact Survey completion |
Programme Components
Legacy Points accumulate on the learner profile as learners complete milestones, engage with community, and build career readiness. They make progress visible over time. Points are recognition of the journey — never a currency, cash equivalent, or discount.
Badges are verified proof of capability. They are externally shareable and employer-facing. They signal what a learner knows and can do. Not participation certificates — they are earned through structured curriculum milestones and certified achievements.
Achievements signal sustained habits and consistent performance over time. They are unlocked through defined streaks and thresholds. They signal how a learner shows up, not just what they completed.
Rewards are the tangible outcome of sustained engagement. Some have direct career utility — resume reviews, mentorship sessions. Others recognise ALX identity through branded merchandise and experiences. Both are legitimate. Connect each reward to the part of the journey it belongs to.
What Legacy Rewards is Not
| The misread | The correct framing |
| A sales or commercial incentive tool | Legacy Rewards recognises learning and community behaviours. It has no function as a sales or commercial incentive. |
| A job placement programme | Legacy Rewards builds the track record and habits that make learners more hireable. It does not place people in jobs. |
| A discount or cashback system | Legacy Points are recognition of sustained engagement, redeemable for rewards designed to support the learner journey. |
| A marketing campaign | Legacy Rewards is embedded in the learner journey. It is a long-term behavioural programme, not a campaign with a start and end date. |
| A reward for every action | An action earns recognition when it links clearly to a graduation outcome, meaningful community engagement, or career readiness. Weak links do not qualify. |
Language Guardrails
A hard line applies across every channel and format: nothing produced under the Legacy Rewards brand should be readable as a guarantee of employment or hiring.
| Avoid | Use instead |
| “Legacy Rewards will get you hired” | “Legacy Rewards builds the habits and track record that make you more hireable” |
| “Points are worth X rands / dollars” | “Points accumulate on your learner profile and unlock rewards once you meet defined milestones” |
| “We reward you for showing up” | Recognition is tied to actions that move the needle on graduation, community contribution, or career readiness |
| Positioning Badges as participation trophies | Badges signal verified achievement and sustained performance. Not everyone earns them. |
| Any message implying Legacy Rewards finds people jobs | Be specific: Legacy Rewards builds habits, track record, and readiness. Employment is the learner’s outcome to reach. |
Behaviour Loop
Learn → Contribute → Grow
Recognition signals that the action mattered. Rewards make the sustained effort tangible. Together they send learners back into the loop with a reason to keep going. Recognition is the prompt to continue — not the end state. Any message that positions earning a reward as the final goal works against the logic of the programme.
Channel Guidance
eHub and community posts
This is where most learners encounter Legacy Rewards. Lead with the habit or action. Follow with the recognition or reward. A learner reading a community post should immediately understand what earns points, why it matters, and what they stand to gain.
Never open with points mechanics. The action and its significance come first.
Ex.
- Your milestone submission this week earns 50 Legacy Points. The consistency you build here is the same consistency employers look for. Keep going.
- Hosting a community Q&A this month? That’s a Career Readiness action that earns Legacy Points and builds the kind of leadership record that stands out on a profile. See how to log it in eHub.
The right place to be specific. Name the action, the recognition, and the reward in full. Legacy Points values, achievement criteria, and reward details all belong here. Keep the learner as the subject throughout. Avoid opening with what Legacy Rewards provides. Open with where the learner is in their journey.
Ex.
- You’ve submitted consistently for eight weeks. That’s not a small thing. It’s the kind of habit that builds a track record employers notice, and it’s exactly what Legacy Rewards is built to recognise. Your Consistency Achievement is close. Here’s what you need to unlock it.
- Your Legacy Points balance has reached 450. You’ve earned access to a 1-on-1 resume review with an ALX professional. This is the kind of session that turns consistent effort into a career conversation starter. Book yours here.
Social media
Community and transformation angle leads. Points can appear but should never open the message. Keep copy short, grounded, and specific. Abstract uplift language has no place here. Name the habit. Name what it signals. Let the outcome do the work.
Ex.
- Submitting your milestone on time, every time. It sounds straightforward. Employers call it reliability. Legacy Rewards calls it a strong signal. Keep building your record.
- Every community post, every Q&A you host, every milestone you hit. It all lives on your learner profile. Legacy Rewards makes your progress visible. 450 points and counting.
Events (slides, banners, pull-up banners)
Simplest possible message. One habit, one recognition, one CTA. Even in the shortest format, the connection to graduation or career readiness should be visible. Points values are appropriate here. Keep them accurate and always include T&Cs apply.
Ex.
- Show up. Submit consistently. Build your record. Every action earns Legacy Points. T&Cs apply.
- Graduating earns you Legacy Points and a Skill Badge that travels with you. Build the habits that get you there. Scan to learn more.
Funder and partner communications
Outcome and impact language leads. Connect Legacy Rewards to graduation rate and the enrolled-to-employed arc. Avoid positioning the programme as a perks or loyalty scheme. The strategic frame is a behavioural programme designed to influence measurable outcomes.
Ex.
- Legacy Rewards is a behavioural programme designed to improve graduation rates by recognising the habits that move learners from enrolled to employed. Every recognised action connects to a learning progression, community contribution, or career readiness outcome.
- The data shows a clear link between consistent milestone submission and graduation. Legacy Rewards reinforces that behaviour at scale, making progress visible, rewarding the right actions, and giving learners a reason to keep going when the journey gets hard.
The 5-Second Test
Before any Legacy Rewards communication goes out:
- Does this connect to a graduation outcome, meaningful community contribution, or career readiness?
- Is there proof here, or a promise?
- Does it lead with the habit or the action — not the reward?
- Could a learner read this and conclude that Legacy Rewards will get them hired?
- Who is the hero — the learner, or the programme?
If question 4 is yes, or question 5 is the programme: revise before publishing.
